The Department of Biological Sciences offers a program of study leading to a Bachelor of Sciences degree. The Department offers a balanced program with areas of specialization ranging from molecular to ecosystem-level of biological organization (see Career Opportunities). A minimum of 120 hours of course work, including all University, College of Sciences and Departmental requirements, must be met.
Biological Sciences majors, (BIOBS, PMED, PPHAR, PDENT, PVET, PPT), are required to earn a grade of "C" or better in all mathematics and sciences courses presented to satisfy departmental degree requirements in the curriculum.
Students must take BIOS 1073, 1071, 1083, 1081, 2014, 2114, 3091, and 4010 as well as a minimum of 23 hours of credit in biological sciences electives. A maximum of 4 credit hours of 2000-level biological sciences courses may be taken for biological sciences elective credit. Additional 2000-level courses may be taken for elective credit. A maximum of six credit hours of research courses (BIOS 2002, 2092, 3092, and 4091) may be taken for biological sciences elective credit. Additional hours may be taken for free elective credit where permitted.
A student must take five biological sciences elective courses at the 3000/4000-level from courses that have second digits from 1 through 9. At least two of these courses must be in the general grouping of physiology, biochemistry and cell, and molecular biology. Referred to as Group I, these courses have numbers with the second digit 1,2, 3, 4 or 7 (e.g., BIOS 3104, 3113, 3284, 3354, 3490, 3754, 4114, 4123, 4153, 4224, 4334, 4343, 4353, 4363, 4373, 4384,4413, 4421, 4490, 4714, 4713, 4724). Two courses must be taken in the area of ecology, evolution, and systematics. Referred to as Group II, these courses have numbers with the second digit 5,6,8, or 9 (e.g., 3590, 3653, 3944, 4513, 4523, 4590, 4624, 4634, 4644, 4653, 4814, 4833, 4844, 4913, 4914, 4924, 4934, 4944, 4954, 4974, 4994). BIOS 3453, 3854, 4003, and 4713 may be included in either group but not both. These five courses must also meet the following requirements: (1) at least two courses must be taken from each group, (2) at least two courses must include a laboratory, and (3) at least two courses must be at the 4000-level.
All students must attain a grade of "C" or higher in any course serving as a prerequisite for a higher course.
