The Department of Biological Sciences offers an integrated program of course work and independent research leading to the Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences. Independent research is conducted under the guidance of a thesis advisor and advisory committee selected by the student to reflect her or his research interest. Research specializations of the faculty range from cellular and molecular biology to ecosystem and environmental biology. Student research projects benefit from access to a variety of on-campus and off-campus resources and collaborations. All M.S. students will complete and defend a thesis.
The M.S. program currently enrolls approximately 20 students in a variety of fields. Financial support (stipend and waiver of tuition) is available in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Potential applicants should see degree requirements and application procedures, and they are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members in their area. For further information, contact:

There are three options available in our M.S. program to suit student interests:
1. Students may pursue a degree in one of the research areas represented by the Biological Sciences faculty. Research opportunities exist in ecology, behavior, genetics, evolutionary biology, conservation biology, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Research areas are listed on the faculty pages.
2. Students interested in developing skills in the molecular biology and biotechnology may conduct research leading to the Master of Science degree with emphasis on biotechnology. Students will conduct research projects in one of a number of laboratories either at UNO or at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Southern Regional Research Center, all of which emphasize state of the art biotechnology.
3. Students interested in biomedical sciences may take courses and conduct research leading to the Master of Sciences degree with a Biomedical Sciences concentration. With the approval of their advisory committee, students may conduct their research in collaboration with a graduate faculty member at the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Graduate Studies, who then becomes a member of the student’s advisory committee. A minimum of three credit hours of courses will be taken at the LSUHSC. Thesis research may be conducted at either or both institutions.
