1After the academic year beginning August 2008, LSU SVM will no longer accept CHEM 1023. For the year beginning August 2009, only CHEM 1028 will be accepted.

2After the academic year beginning August 2008, LSU SVM will no longer accept BIOS 2114 as meeting the biochemistry requirement. For the Spring 2008 semester at UNO, students should take BIOS 3104. Beginning in the Fall 2008 semester, UNO intends to replace BIOS 3104 with BIOS 4103, a new 3 credit hour course. It will have the same prerequisites as BIOS 3104: BIOS 2114, CHEM 2117, and CHEM 2118.

3LSU SVM recommends that students take MATH 1125 and 1126 to comply with UNO’s BS degree requirement in Biology. They will accept credit for MATH 1115 and 1116 to meet the mathematics requirement. You CAN NOT earn credit towards graduation for both sets of math courses. If you anticipate earning the BS in Biology, you should satisfy the pre-vet and BS degree requirements by taking MATH 1125 and 1126.

Because few applicants are admitted with the minimal course requirements, students should plan on at least a three-year undergraduate program, ideally selecting courses that lead to an undergraduate degree (see the notes above regarding the mathematics and chemistry requirements). Courses such as Comparative Anatomy (BIOS 2954), Histology and Cytology (BIOS 3284), Animal Physiology (BIOS 3354), and Developmental Biology (BIOS 4413) with lab (BIOS 4421) will provide additional preparation for veterinary school. These courses also serve as biology electives for the B.S. degree in Biological Sciences. Students are encouraged to acquire a broad, general education and to specialize in a discipline that interests them personally.

General information about LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and application information is available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/. The course requirements for other veterinary schools may differ from those for LSU. Most schools are readily accessible via the internet starting with http://netvet.wustl.edu/vetmed.htm.

Admission Requirements

1.        Completion of the above listed courses with a GPA of at least 3.0 and at least a C in all required courses.

2.        Submission of scores for the GRE. (The MCAT is no longer acceptable). The GRE must be received by LSU School of Veterinary Medicine by December 15 in the year prior to which you are applying for entry. The GRE may be taken at the UNO Testing Center (BA 216). You may register by telephone (280-6678) with a credit card.

3.        Various non-academic qualifications are also considered. These may include motivation, integrity, maturity, experience in a veterinary environment and ability to communicate.

4.        All pre-professional requirements for the LSU program must be completed by the end of the spring term of the calendar year in which application is made. The VMCAS application deadline is October 1 in the year prior to which you are applying for entry. Starting with the 2008 application cycle, both the GRE scores and supplemental application/fee must be received by the LSU SVM no later than November 15th.
